The ECE Department offers advising to students on a continuous basis. Advising is done in a multi-faceted approach by the Chief Departmental Advisor (CDA), the Academic Coordinator, and a faculty advisor.
Each student must meet with the ECE Academic Coordinator every semester prior to registration for a future term. The Academic Coordinator works in conjunction with the CDA to maintain student records, assist with transfer credit evaluations, inform and educate students on University and Departmental policies and procedures, refer students to other departments or offices for assistance and services where appropriate, develop degree plans, remove the advising block, and help with applying for graduation. Students should have a degree plan built in DegreeWorks (see instructions on How to Create a Plan in DegreeWorks in the Advising Resources section below) prior to seeing the Academic Coordinator for advising and be prepared to discuss any questions or concerns about that degree plan during their meeting.
Once each semester, the Department holds a group advising sessions conducted by the CDA and Academic Coordinator. Alternatively, students can meet with the Academic Coordinator to select courses for the upcoming semester (see instructions on How to Create an Advising Appointmentin the Advising Resources section below). At the group advising session, the overall requirements of the curriculum are briefly summarized, but with more attention paid to recent changes, and to upcoming courses and events for the following two semesters.
Students are also required to meet with their faculty advisor, bringing a copy of their résumé and degree plan. Students' discussions with their faculty advisors involve career exploration, choosing a minor (if desired), advice on upper division ECE courses (technical electives and concentration areas), pursuit of graduate study, opportunities for internships and co-ops, etc. Additionally, Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê×ÊÁÏ's Career Development Services provides a full array of career services connecting students, alumni, and employers. Once the student meets with their assigned faculty advisor and attends a group advising session and/or meets with the Undergraduate Coordinator to confirm their DegreeWorks plan, the advisor block on the student's account is removed, and only then can a student register for courses.
In addition to the advising procedures mentioned above, the CDA maintains close contact with all advising-related University events and procedural changes. The CDA, along with the Academic Coordinator, updates and maintains the undergraduate advising policies and the webpages related to undergraduate matters. The Department also regularly promotes career opportunities provided from constituents to students via email and website postings. The Department hosts Professional Development Meetings each semester in which students are exposed to the research done by faculty members and to other invited guests. In addition, the Department encourages the attendance to the weekly departmental seminars.
