Upcoming Holidays:
The Commonwealth typically observes 12 holidays. There may be more if the Governor schedules additional holiday time. In order to be eligible for holiday pay, employees must work or be on paid leave the workday before and the workday after the holiday. The only exceptions are where holidays fall on the first or last workday in a pay period.
Holiday pay is for eight hours. Classified part-time employees receive holiday pay based on their percentage of full-time employment. For example, a 50% classified part-time employee would be entitled to four hours of holiday pay.
If a holiday falls on an employee's scheduled day off, the employee will be credited with eight hours of compensatory leave. An employee who has to work on a holiday, will get pay for the time worked and be eligible for compensatory time for the holiday missed.
Impact of Leave Without Pay on Holiday Pay:
In support of the academic calendar, university holidays do not always coincide with state holidays because faculty and staff are needed to keep the university operating when students are present. In order to receive holiday pay, employees must either work or be on paid leave the work day before and the work day after the holiday. If an employee is in a leave without pay status for any portion of the work day before or after the holiday, they are ineligible for holiday pay.
