About this Program

About one-fifth of the world's population, or over one billion people, speaks some variety of Chinese, making it the most commonly spoken first language in the world. As one of largest trading partners of the United States, China is becoming the second largest economy in the world. Whether you are studying Chinese to fulfill your foreign language requirement, as preparation for study abroad in China, for a minor in Chinese Studies, or for your future career, this program offers you both curricular and extracurricular means to meet your goals.

Program Highlights

  • Student-centered, interactive and informative classes, with key language points taught through multimedia and drills practiced in class

  • Students learn the Chinese language and experience the Chinese culture through their presentations, movies, student-developed games, and three cultural contests of Karaoke in Chinese, Chinese Calligraphy, and Chinese Cuisine

  • After class, students can join Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê×ÊÁÏ’s Chinese Culture and Language Club and are partnered with native speakers to practice their language skills and to understand Chinese culture

  • All classes and extracurricular activities provide students with an encouraging learning environment to build a collaborative learning community

  • Students have access to the Language Learning Center as a resource

Requirements

What are the requirements to apply for Chinese Studies at Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê×ÊÁÏ?
Students entering the Minor program in Chinese Studies should meet the minimum university admission requirements Undergraduate Admission.
  • The Chinese Studies minor consists of 12 credit hours of 300- and 400- level courses that combine the study of language and culture. 

  • For completion of a minor, a student must have a minimum overall cumulative grade point average of 2.00 in all courses specified as a requirement for the minor exclusive of lower-level courses and prerequisite courses and complete a minimum of six hours in upper-level courses in the minor requirement through courses offered by Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê×ÊÁÏ.
