A case of atypical Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) has been confirmed on a farm in Dumfries and Galloway today. Precautionary movement restrictions have been put in place, with investigations under way to identify the origin of the disease outbreak.

Unlike classical BSE, atypical BSE occurs spontaneously and is a non-contagious form of the disease.

Ȥҹapp President Dr Elizabeth Mullineaux said: “The Scottish Government has confirmed a single case of atypical BSE in a cow on a farm in Dumfries and Galloway. The animal did not enter the human food chain and Food Standards Scotland has confirmed this case poses no risk to human health.

“The fast identification of the case shows that the veterinary surveillance system is robust and effective in detecting potential risk.

“Ȥҹapp is in close contact with colleagues in the relevant species divisions and with the Scottish Government and will update members with any new information as it emerges. Vets in Scotland should refer to the Government’s BSE guidance on the clinical signs and how to report any suspicious cases.”
